Working from Home with Dogs

What is your dog doing while you work from home?

If she’s running around, digging in the garbage, chasing the kids, or pushing toys into your lap, then you probably aren’t getting much done. Hold your dog to a higher standard by putting her on place or in a down. Haven’t perfected those commands yet? Just put her in the crate so that you can focus on your work, and let her out when you’re ready to play!

Food Safety

Today is World Chocolate Day! While I absolutely love chocolate, this is a great opportunity to remind everyone that not all human food is safe for dogs to eat. Check out our list of dog-safe foods below. Our rule of thumb: when in doubt, your dog can do without.

Addressing Dog Reactivity

Dog reactivity is a very common issue that dog owners are struggling with. Whether your dog lunges, barks, or runs after other dogs, it can be incredibly stressful to not know if you’ll run across another dog, and if/how you’ll be able to handle that situation.

Please seek help from a professional trainer if you are dealing with this issue, as there are lots of variable that come into play here. A trainer will be able to help get your dog into the right state of mind and teach you how to appropriately and safely have your dog around other dogs.

Dogs in Public – Etiquette

We fully support and encourage people to take their dogs out in public… with some guidelines. It’s important to remember that not all people love your dog as much as you do. So keep your dog close, keep your dog calm, and clean up after potty time. This will ensure that local business continue to invite us in with our pups. Be a positive example of what dog ownership should look like!

Learn a new way to communicate with your dog that will allow you to go anywhere and do anything together. For life.

More Than Love

I truly believe that if love was all that was needed to help solve dogs’ behavioral problems, I would be out of a job. Unfortunately, dogs from very loving and generous homes are coming to us with all sorts of behavior problems.

Love can only go so far in providing stability and a sense of safety in a home, and unfortunately that line is not far from the front door. True trust and respect in your relationship are developed through creating clear boundaries with consistent follow-through. This means rewarding for the things we like and providing consequences for the behaviors that aren’t acceptable. Without this balance, you will have a dog that will make its own rules, and I can guarantee that they won’t line up with yours.

Fear vs. Aggression

Too often dogs are labelled “aggressive” when we are actually seeing signs of fear, stress, and insecurity. While training obedience is important, we must also put effort into understanding our dogs’ needs and body language to make sure that we are setting them up for success in every situation.

Think your dog is showing signs of aggression? It’s entirely possible. But more often than not, we’re seeing dogs that don’t know how to cope with their anxiety which is resulting in unhealthy reactions. Reach out to us if you need help clarifying your dog’s behavior and setting up a plan for success.
